Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Today is the 40th day of the scheduled 60-day legislative session. Several significant deadlines have passed and a large portion of the legislation proposed this year is considered dead. For a reminder of how a bill becomes law, click here.

In my past legislative updates, you have read about several bills I sponsored this year. Unfortunately, only one of those bills has made it through the legislative process so far. This is not uncommon for Republican measures. During this session so far, 332 bills were voted out of the House, and only 79 of those bills were sponsored by Republicans.

House Bill 2405 is currently in the Senate Agriculture, Water and Rural Economic Development Committee. It is scheduled for a hearing on Feb. 24 at 10:00 a.m. This bill would require the Washington State Department of Agriculture to determine whether hemp seed should be allowed as a component of animal feed. Current research suggests that hemp seed provides benefits to animal health, animal welfare, and the resulting animal product for certain classes of animals.

Town hall – Saturday

My fellow legislators from the 42nd District – Rep. Jason Overstreet and Senator Doug Ericksen – and I, will be hosting a joint town hall on Saturday. You are invited to ask questions and make comments. We will also be briefing participants on the current events of the 2014 legislative session. I encourage you to join us.
